A device that joins networks (for example, to connect your home network to the Internet). A router is also known as a gateway or base station.

Port forwarding is a way that your router filters information.

When a router passes information (for example, between the Internet and your network), it filters the information based on which ports are being used and how those ports are set up.

When you cannot run your Net2Go Web site, check your router's port forwarding settings. After you open your router's Web-based administration utility, you can often find port forwarding settings in the Advanced area.

Check the following:

· Make sure no other program on your computer uses the Net2Go port number (8008).

· Make sure that the port number specified is complete and accurate.

· Make sure that the port forwards to the correct IP address. Since most home network routers use DHCP, your router periodically gives your computers new IP addresses. This is a common source of port forwarding problems.

 

Generally, a port is a channel for network communications, including the ports found in a computer, router, or firewall. Different types of data transmit through individual ports, which have numbers similar to channel numbers on a radio dial. The term "port" can also refer to the physical ports on computers and devices (for example, a serial port on a computer).

This is an assigned number used to identify a computer or device that is connected to a network or to the Internet. An IP address consists of four numbers (each of which is no greater than 255), with periods separating the numbers (for example, 172.31.1.1). IP is an abbreviation for Internet Protocol.

A protocol that dynamically assigns IP addresses from a predefined list. By limiting the time, addresses can be reassigned. When DHCP is used, whenever a computer connects to the network, it automatically gets a dynamic IP address (not a static IP address). DHCP is an abbreviation for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol.

Many router maintenance utilities include an option you can use to check for firmware updates.

To make it easier to use update firmware, you can open your routerÆs Web-based administrative utility directly from the network map. To do so, click Network Map, and then in the map, click the router. In the Details tab, click the router administration task.

This Network Magic feature allows you to access selected shared folders when away from home through the Web, using a popular Web browser. Examples of what you can do include showing relatives photos of your family and transferring files between the network and a computer outside the home.

You can easily access your router's settings using the Network Magic network map.

Click Network Map, and then in the map, click the router. In the Details tab, click the router administration task.
